Is the game REALLY free?
- Team Chivalry makes no profit and does this as volunteer work because it is something we are passionate about. We do not charge anyone to play our game currently. All you need to play age of chivalry for free is a source based game. The reason for this is Age of Chivalry is not a standalone game and we have used Valve's Source Engine to create our game. A brief list of games you can own any of which will allow you to play Age of Chivalry free:
- Team Fortress 2
- Counter-strike: Source
- Portal
- Left 4 Dead
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Day of Defeat Source
- Half-Life 2
- Half-Life 2 (Note: The free version that comes with some nvidia video cards will NOT work)
We do have a paypal account and appreciate all donations for our work!
Will there be a single-player version?
- Currently there is no plans for a single-player version, but if the game is a success who knows!
What type of computer will i need to run the game?
- Any PC that can run Half-Life 2 will be able to run Age of Chivalry, though the game can be expensive in terms of network load, we recommend playing in servers with less than 70 ping whenever possible.
How does the Stamina System Work?
- The stamina system has been placed in the game to prevent it from becoming just another hack and slash game. Each action you do, be it attacking, defending, sprinting or jumping, will all cost you stamina. Your stamina bar is displayed on your HUD in yellow. Once it is below 10%, your character enters a tired/weak state. At this point, with heavy breathing, your attacks will only deal 50% normal damage. If you get to 0% stamina you will enter and exhaustion state, you will hear the player grunt and he will be unable to perform any combat actions. Stamina slowly recovers when a player is not performing combat actions or sprinting.
How come my block never works?
- The blocking system in Age of Chivalry is based on 100 degrees from the eyes of the player. Therefor if a player with a long weapon attacks you from the side, or above, you must "aim" the block in that direction to compensate. Generally, the best thing to do is to try to block the very "tip" of your opponents weapon.
Also it is important to note that some of the smaller weapons can not fully block the larger weapons and you will take damage when trying this. Ex. Daggers, archer shortsword etc. cannot successfully block a warhammer, you will take some "Push Through Damage"
How do you get a decapitation?
- There is a neck hitbox just below the chin and above the collar bone that must be struck to perform a decap. Only edged weapons, such as swords and axes can perform decapitations and this swing must be the killing blow
Are different attacks actually different?
- Yes, you will find on most weapons that the stab and overhead attacks deal more damage, but are harder to land. While the horizontal slash is generally better for dispersing a crowd or helping to control your enemies movement. A lot of this information can be found on the class selection screen by pressing "n" ingame.
How do i find the next objective?
- Active objectives are displayed as green circles on a players screen and will float where the objective is, give a distance and short description of how to accomplish the goal. Additionally, icons on the minimap allow for easy navigation and understanding of the objectives, you can see a full minimap by pressing default "F" ingame.
How do i change my class?
Press "N" to bring up the class selection screen, remember you must select a class, subclass and then press accept before you will spawn!
How come my enemies do so much more damage than me?
Different weapons have different damages, speeds and ranges. It is also important to note that headshots do 25% more damage than regular attacks and neckshots do 30% more damage. Leg shots do 25% less damage and the rest is normal. Also keep in mind with extremely low stamina you will do very little damage!
I would like to help out in making this game, who do i contact?

Will there be massive battles like in the medieval ages?
- No, you will not see thousands of players fighting at the same time, but there will be thousands of deaths during a game as players die rather easy and spawn again fast. How many different players at the same time on a server is really up to the person running the server. But our maps will be designed to play with 16 vs. 16 players or less. Source engine supports up to 250 players on a single server, but that is not likely to be seen. Age of Chivalry is a game designed around a smaller amount of players on the team, working together to achieve the goals. The current player limit per server is 32.
Is there gonna be monsters that you can kill?
- No there will be no monsters, but there will be non-player-characters also known as NPCs. They will come in the form of Humans and Animals, and you will be able to interact with them in different ways. At the initial stages of the game you will not be able to interact with the NPCs that much, some animals respond to damage and some persons talk or do other things. Later NPC's may play a role in the battles or objectives of some maps.
What views will i be able to play in?
- Only First person view is available to the player. We do not want thirdperson view as that destroys the immersion of playing. For developers there is a thirdperson option, but its not supported and regarded as a cheat while playing on a server.
Voiceovers, voice taunting?
- There is a voice communication system where you can use a menu to say things including taunts (press "z" ingame). Taunts will be improved at a later stage in the development as we want to make animations that correspond with the spoken words to make it look better.
Horses?
- Although we would like to include horses, its not easily done in a multi-player game. This is a feature we have saved for last, but we do at some point want to include it so we can have first person jousting and tournaments. Horses are planned to be the last thing that we will work on. Its gonna take the full teams effort to get this working in a good manner. We have a working horse that you can ride based upon the vehicle code, but we want to make sure that players can battle off the back of the horse and we also need some new weapons like lances for mounted battles.
Will the game have bots?
- Yes, bots are currently available and will continually be improved. Type "bot_add 1" in console to get them to join your game.
Will AoC feature HDR lightning, Bloom or other effects?
- HDR and Bloom is standard features in the Source engine. AoC is using it in all maps, even though we are trying to make the effects rather small so it doesn't become something you want to turn off in order to see or play better. HDR and Bloom are pretty to look at, but they do not contribute to the gameplay. We are mainly focusing on making a fun game. We are also experimenting with a few other shaders that we will use for other gameplay effects. This will be revealed in future versions of the game.
Will i be able to make usermaps for AoC?
- Yes, you can find the aoc.fgd in your Steam\steamapps\$username\age of chivalry\ageofchivalry folder. For help configuring hammer to work with aoc, see this forum post.
Usermade Campaigns? Can i create my own story?
- Any server operator will be able to create their own campaigns by setting up new maps in the maps configs. So it will be very easy for a server to add in usermade maps or just make a twist in the history. A much further developed "Campaign Mode" is likely to appear in later versions of the game.
Realistic gameplay?
- Age of Chivalry is not a medieval simulator, its a game based on the medieval times. There is not set timeframe for the game in terms of actual history. We are only basing the game on medieval times as it gives us more freedom to make the game more fun to play. We are also creating our own world and story so that we don't step on any religous toes. The game is considered "Realistic Fantasy", meaning that while we try to attain realism as much as possible, sometimes "Hollywoodizing" things is in the best interest of the gameplay. It is important to note however, that no magic will ever be part of AoC.
When I try to play I get the error "Source Based game required to run MODS", why?
- The reason for this can be found in the first answer, because Age of Chivalry is not a standalone game you will need to own a source-based game to play. Above there is a list of games that meet these requirements.
Is the game still being developed?
- Yes, Team Chivalry is extremely active and regularly updates their fans via the home page on progress. The most current release is known as Age of Chivalry, Toe-to-Toe (CR2). That version has been patched twice since that major release and the latest version was released on October 7th, 2009.
